Black and Grey Tank Cleaning and Inspection on a Yacht
Overview
Coastal Tank was recently contracted to perform comprehensive cleaning and inspection services aboard a private yacht. The project included the full cleaning of one black water tank and one grey water tank, both critical to the vessel’s waste management system. Our certified tank cleaning technicians mobilized to the vessel, providing all required equipment, safety measures, and compliance documentation to ensure a professional and efficient process.
Project Summary
- Vessel Type: Private yacht
- Tanks Serviced: 1 Black Water Tank (2,640 liters), 1 Grey Water Tank
- Services Provided: Pumping, hot water pressure cleaning, vacuuming, interior inspection, corrosion assessment
- Recommendations: Spot repairs for grey tank coating; full blast and recoat for black tank within 3–6 months
Inspection Findings
Grey Water Tank:
- Isolated coating failures were observed where the protective layer had worn down to the steel substrate.
- Moderate corrosion was present in affected areas, but the majority of the coating remains intact.
- Coastal Tank recommended immediate power tool surface preparation and spot touch-up painting to prevent further corrosion and extend coating life.
Black Water Tank:
- The coating system has reached the end of its service life, showing significant blistering, flaking, and exposed steel.
- Several previous patch repairs were found delaminating and no longer providing effective protection.
- Coastal Tank recommended a complete blasting and recoating within 3–6 months to mitigate corrosion and maintain tank integrity.
Scope of Work
Our team began by protecting the vessel’s interior with drop cloths along all hose runs and around designated work areas. After coordinating with the vessel’s crew to identify access points and establish a cleaning plan, the tanks were pumped down and washed using high-pressure hot water cleaning to remove sludge, solids, loose paint, and biological residue. Each tank was then vacuumed dry and inspected according to SSPC SP-1 standards to verify cleanliness and identify any coating or corrosion issues.
Results
Following cleaning and inspection, the tanks were left free of debris and ready for final review by the vessel’s engineering team. The inspection findings were documented with photos and detailed recommendations for future maintenance planning.
